I guess that we (Europeans) are 'blessed' because everybody uses Whatsapp and that's cross-platform. But yeah, it's Whatsapp and it's terrible.

I genuinely prefer sms over Whatsapp (I use sms, I don't have Whatsapp). The only real downside is no support for group messaging. And sending pictures is a mess.

Oh forget it, I'll build my own chat app. Web based, PWA style. Truly cross-platform. The only thing I need to make it really work is a proper browser on iOS that supports web notifications.
